REVIEW: Girl Who Sees Smells (2015)

gs5
CUTE!!! If there is one word that can define Girl Who Sees Smells for me, it is this. The cute romance salted with murder mystery about a serial killer and punctuating everything with a supernatural ability — the result is a show which isn’t flawless but manages to find a place in your heart.
The drama centres around two people who have many things in common. Our hero is Moo Gak who lost his sister when a serial killer killed her while the same person kills our heroine Cho Rim’s parents. They both suffer from this tragedy which results in amusing consequences as she gains the ability to see smells while he loses ability to feel physical pain and tastes. Their paths cross and then starts a journey where they not only solve the mystery of the serial killer but also find peace and love in each other, and realise what they really want to do in life.
sg (2)
As I said before, the piece-de-resistance of this drama is its main pair of Moo Gak and Cho Rim. They are charming individually as well as together. Cho Rim is a girl who is bubbly, helpful and brave. The way she is willing to help Moo Gak in his investigations and also later, willingly wants to help the police by keeping herself in danger, all this shows how much courageous she is. She is someone you would want to be friends with — she is that sweet and loving. Moo Gak is one of the best male leads in dramaverse. His only mission was to search the man who killed his sister but I love that the drama didn’t make him a jaded, hungry-for-revenge angry young man. In fact, he is very innocent and naive, with determination but he is not a genius. He is respectful and totally sweet. I like that in the end, both realised what they really wanted to do in life.
sg
The couple is admirable as Moo Gak and Cho Rim are both understanding and supportive, and always think and work together, without keeping the other in dark. They bicker but with a lightness. I love how normal their relationship is. They joke around, tease, do lots of cute things together and also have emotional talks. Yoochun and Shin Se Kyung charge the screen with their charming chemistry and form one of the cutest on-screen couples I’ve ever seen. You just want to squish them as they keep on being adorable. This is a couple which came out of nowhere and knocked it out of the park. The scenes where they practise or perform the comic skit, they are truly mirthful.
The drama maps out its run with a mix of development of romance and police investigations. At first, we see some episodic cases as Cho Rim becomes useful to Moo Gak but then the plot gains momentum as the main killer comes into picture again. The drama throws some red herrings in the mix to keep us guessing but ultimately lifts the curtains on who the real culprit is. It’s a risky step but drama handles it quite well as the show turns from whodunnit to a showcase of how our team of cops will find and catch the murderer.
gs4
There is never a dull moment in this completely entertaining show. Apart from cute and comedy, it has lots of chilling moments and also fast pace. The modus operandi of the cops is outrageously incompetent to the extent that I’ve never seen such policemen acting with stupidity. I blame the writing for being so lazy when it comes to painting decent cops, as I don’t expect it to be top-notch but at least give us something acceptable. Also, there are lots of loop holes and illogical sequences, especially in the second half which mars the enjoyment somewhat. Also, it’s crystal clear at the end that the writer was running out of ideas, which led to a very underwhelming last episode.
gs7
But despite its glaring flaws, the drama is charming and entraining enough to keep us in its company. There is no lack of cute and thrills in every turn. One more disappointing feature was incomplete and half baked explanation about the killer’s motives. Even if the team of cops was very inept, I still loved it! I love how much the three cop buddies grew since we first met them. They insulted and disliked Moo Gak initially but later adored him so much. These four, along with Cho Rim and detective Yum Mi — they are fabulous as they plan, act and enjoy together. A lovely family indeed! The formation and growth of relationships is one of the highlights of this show.
gs1
I love that the drama does not have the archetype of involving second leads into romance. Detective Yum Mi is a badass cop who never flinches in front of danger. I loved that sequence where she shows no sign of nervousness when faced with the killer but then actually breaks out in cold sweat when left alone. This was such a realistic emotion. I also liked the little bonding that was formed between her and Cho Rim.

Spoiler:
How can I complete this review without talking about our chef. Nam Goong Min brings his best game to the drama as the creepy serial killer who remains as calm as a midnight sea. But when he shows his true colours, I always got shivers down my spine. He always talks like a gentleman but still manages to scare you. I think the drama should have shown some back story leading to his deeds but alas, we only got some bits and pieces that didn’t clear the whole picture. Finally, the motivations for murder and his feelings for Cho Rim remained more or less ambiguous.
sg8
The cinematography is good and I especially loved the sparkling smells that Cho Rim sees — they looked beautiful and like something coming from a Disney movie. The fantasy element about smells is nicely woven along with the story of the show as the ability comes in handy in investigations. But explanation for how it came into being is avoided altogether. The music is sunny and sweet.
Shin Se Kyung is winsome in this drama — exuberant, bubbly, vivacious — she makes her character come alive and makes us to fall in love with her. Yoochun is one the cutest actors, hands down. I had this urge to pinch his cheeks on several occasions. He efficiently shows humour (those comic lines for stage were HILARIOUS) as well as emotional bits. This couple is simply love. Nam Goong Min lends a class act. Yoon Jin Seo does a wonderful job for a role which initially looked thankless but later picked up some weight. The three main cops — played by Lee Won Jong, Choi Tae Joon and Jo Hee Bong — provide lots of funny moments, sometimes intentional and unintentional at others. Song Jong Ho leaves a strong impression even in a small role.
Overall, Girl Who Sees Smells is a perfect place if you want to smell something delightfully sweet and cute. Just don’t take its mystery-crime genre seriously. This might sound like a broken record but the drama has one of the best couples of dramaland!
My Rating: 8 out of 10

Major stars talk ‘Death Note’

June 08,2015

Two musical stars, Kim Jun-su, left, and Hong Kwang-ho, will perform in the upcoming musical “Death Note.” [JoongAng Ilbo]
Two musical titans are meeting on stage in the upcoming production of “Death Note,” based on a popular Japanese comic of the same name.

And the response from fans has been explosive.

The first and second rounds of tickets sold out as soon as they were released online, meaning that 60,000 (roughly 70 percent of all the seats) have already been reserved.

The titans in question are Kim Jun-su and Hong Kwang-ho, who will play the musical’s lead characters L and Light, respectively.

Light is a high school student who one days finds the Death Note, a supernatural object that kills a person whose name is written on it. Light tries to rule the world with this deadly notebook, while detective L tries to stop him.

Kim and Hong - the two most sought-after actors in the musical scene - have joined the show as the main cast. They will therefore go on stage 51 times until October, with no alternates.

It goes without saying that Kim, as a member of the K-pop trio JYJ, possesses enormous star power. His competency as a musical actor was recognized in “Mozart” and “Elizabeth,” both of which sold out all their tickets.

Hong, who debuted as a musical actor in “The Late Empress” in 2002, is known for his thunderous vocal power.

Acknowledged by international musical producer Cameron Mackintosh last year, Hong made a debut on London’s West End, playing Thuy in “Miss Saigon.”

The JoongAng Ilbo, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, met with the two celebrities early this month to talk about their latest roles.

Q. How do you feel about the fact that tickets to the musical are selling like hot cakes?

A. Kim: I’m very glad. I have to admit I was sort of worried because out of the six musical productions I have appeared in so far, this was the largest ticket opening.

Also, since the show takes place in Seongnam, Gyeonggi, I thought it would be too far for those who work in Seoul to come.

Hong: I was also surprised to hear the news when I was in England. I decided that Jun-su being considered to have the strongest star power was no joke.

The musical has a single cast, which is rare. Do you feel pressure about this?

Kim: It was something I’ve always wanted to try out. I know it comes with a large responsibility, but I also feel proud of that.

The biggest advantage of a single cast is that you can choreograph your moves perfectly with your partner. Even the smallest difference, such as the timing when you say a line, can influence the audience’s interpretation. But [a single cast] can prevent that kind of confusion.

Hong: I think we can stage a more complete show. I believe we won’t go through any illness or accidents.

How is the chemistry between you two?

Kim: My voice is better accompanied by male vocals rather than female vocals. The uniqueness in my voice develops a nice harmony with Hong’s classical masculine voice.

Hong: Jun-su is always well-prepared on top of his great singing ability. I think I’m getting a free ride from him.

Junsu's pet dog makes a cameo on Jeju Island Gatsby

Vivi on Fri, Jun 05, 2015

There's a special cameo in episode 7 of Jeju Island Gatsby (aka Warm and Cozy), but it's not an actor or idol who shows up on the screen. JYJ's Junsu's pet dog Xiahki made an appearance in the series as Lee Sung Jae's character's pet.
In the series, Lee Sung Jae plays Song Jung Geun, a successful resort owner. The resort scenes are filmed at Junsu's luxury Toscana hotel on Jeju, so when filming scenes of Jung Geun relaxing at home, Junsu's beloved Samoyed Xiahki was the natural choice as the character's furry friend!

The seventh episode that aired on June 3 featured the first close-up of the dog named Xiahki. Fans have been interested in Junsu’s Toscana Hotel which serves as the backdrop for the drama.
Xiahki
Xiahki the dog is already famous amongst Junsu’s fans. Since the drama was already filming at the hotel and Lee Sung Jae’s character owns the resort, Xiahki naturally became a part of the drama as his pet dog.

JYJ’s Jaejoong is scientifically proven to be the “Most Beautiful Man in Asia”

Posted on

Jaejoong
A 2011 article from HealthMedi has come to light as it analyzed the face structure of JYJ’s Jaejoong to crown him as the “Most Beautiful Man in Asia.”

The paper introduces how the mind perceives beauty by describing the brain’s spindle that recognizes the relationships between facial features. Thus, beauty can be determined in the short span of 0.1 second. Through a poll among various Chinese netizens on sites such as Sina and Weibo, Jaejoong took first place as the most beautiful man.
Plastic surgeons explained the best face is one that is not too triangular nor too angled but one that gives a sense of stability and neutrality. The two sides of the face must be perfectly symmetrical and the golden ratio among eyes to nose to mouth is 1.618:1. Finally, the nose must be clear and slightly carved to give a sophisticated impression, also making the face look smaller.

His powerful acting, mesmerizing singing voice and, above all, his eye-catching looks all drive fans of South Korean superstar Kim Jae Joong wild.

When an article featuring Kim appeared in the evening edition of The Yomiuri Shimbun on May 13, not only did all copies sell out at newsstands but stocks at Yomiuri Shimbun offices also disappeared by the end of the day.

Having long been successful as a singer, Kim is spreading his wings in acting, with his first starring role in a TV drama last year. In the show, called "Triangle," he realised the importance of eye expressions.

"If you are always acting with similar movements, the audience will get bored. So, I'm acting with my eyes," the 29-year-old said.

Born in South Korea in 1986, Kim debuted in the showbiz world in 2004 as a member of the boy band TVXQ, known as Tohoshinki in Japanese. Since 2010, he has been active as part of the three-member JYJ as well as having a solo career. In 2010, he made his acting debut in Japan in a serial drama on the Fuji TV network.

His fans have certainly realised this already, but what makes his looks particularly attractive are the diverse expressions he shows. He sometimes looks incredibly cool and at other times, adorable. He occasionally shows mysterious expressions.

He has such a variety of expressions that you wonder whether it's the same person.

It was the same on the day of his interview with The Yomiuri Shimbun.

During the photo shoot, his facial expressions were constantly changing. This flexibility was thoroughly expressed in the drama "Triangle," which he explained is a story in which the protagonist has lost his memories and grows while overcoming difficulties.

Acting and music are completely different, Kim said.

"In music, I'm in the centre, so I can be entirely what 'Jae Joong' is," he said. "But in acting, the role is there first, and I have to put 'Jae Joong' into the character. I'm not satisfied at all with how I am now as an actor."

He seems too hard on himself. In the eyes of this reporter, he already succeeded in appropriately expressing the character's feelings without overacting.

With this comment, he softened his grim expression and said: "I try to minimise body movement and put importance into the expression of my eyes."

Kim's biggest attraction certainly is his sharp, big eyes. But what is the power of eye expression?

"During the shooting of 'Triangle,' I realised it's possible to express a variety of emotions by slightly moving my eyes," he said. "Eyes precisely correspond to your emotions, which move from moment to moment, subtly changing how you look. Eye expressions enable you to act in a variety of ways, even better than just with your body. So, I thought 'Why not try this?'"

Gratitude to Japan

Kim says he owes a lot to Japan regarding his career.

"I learned both Japanese and acting by watching a lot of Japanese dramas. I'm so grateful," he said. "If it's a serial drama, I would watch the entire series, from the first to the last, in one day. I've watched most of the hit dramas, and I've probably seen a lot of dramas starring Kimutaku-san [Takuya Kimura]." In addition to the Japanese dramas, Kim also said he was greatly influenced by Japanese rock music.

He is a great Japanophile and grateful to his Japanese fans. "I'm really grateful for those who have supported me for a long time. From South Korea, I've been sending my appreciation toward you. I'm always trying my hardest to study Japanese so that I won't forget it," he said.

Kim said he was wrapped up in doing something out of the ordinary - anonymously selling off his personal belongings. Why did he start that?

"I wanted to get away from having an attachment to things," he said. "If you waste all your time on something, you won't be able to use that time with someone who is important to you."

"Money and goods won't make people happy," Kim said. "What makes people happy is other people. So, I'd like to treasure my fans more than before."

Produced and cowritten by the internationally renowned Bong Joon-ho (director of Snowpiercer and The Host), Haemoo is based on a popular play that was itself inspired by true events. After a disappointing catch, the crew of a rundown fishing boat agrees to transport 30 illegal Chinese immigrants. A shocking and tragic accident occurs, and the crew must decide just how much their cargo’s lives are worth—and how far they’ll go to protect themselves from prosecution.
The title, which translates to “sea fog,” refers to a nautical phenomenon that can trap ships at sea; here, it serves as a metaphor for the moral fog in which its characters find themselves. “It's a gripping ride … with powerful imagery, a simple and accessible story and a stellar performance from Kim Yoon-seok (the star of The Yellow Sea and The Thieves, no less) as a captain slowly spiraling towards madness” (Clarence Tsui, The Hollywood Reporter). (Dir.: Shim Sung-ho, Korea, 2014, 110 min., DCP, Korean with English subtitles)

JYJ’s Junsu Says He’s Running Out of Colors to Dye His Hair with

JYJ’s Junsu Says He’s Running Out of Colors to Dye His Hair with
During a press conference for his upcoming musical “Death Note” which took place on June 1, JYJ‘s Junsu told reporters that he is running out of colors to dye his hair with.
“I haven’t had a huge issue [because of my dyed hair]. For the past ten years, I have dyed and bleached a lot. It’s to the point that when I look for new colors to dye my hair with, I can’t find any on the chart that I haven’t yet tried,” Junsu said.
He continued, “If I have one problem with my hair, it’s that sometimes when I dry it with a hairdryer, strand fly about like cotton candy. Apart from that, I don’t worry too much.”
Composed by Frank Wildhorm, an American composer who was chosen as “Koreans’ most beloved composer,” and renown Japanese musical director Kuriyama Tamiya, “Death Note” is the musical adaptation of the popular manga series of the same name. Junsu will play the role of genius detective L who is in a constant game of cat and mouse with main protagonist Light Yagami (also known as Raito).  The  musical will run from June 20 to August 9.

Yoochun Confirms Military Enlistment for August 2015

The big exodus really is coming at the end of this year and into 2016 as the huge group of male K-stars born in 1987 get ready to enlist in the army. I can’t even write all the names down because it’ll make me sniffle, there are so many of them. Until then, it’s time to say goodbye to a smaller class of ’86-ers, some of whom have already left for the army including Jaejoong and Choi Jin Hyuk. Already confirmed to enlist this summer is Yunho, and now another original DBSK member joins the army train as Yoochun has just announced that he’s going off to the army this August.

I don’t even need a mea culpa to explain my better late than never affection for Yoochun thanks to The Girl Who Sees Smells. It doesn’t even matter that his fans may find that work just okay, for me he was precious and perfect as Choi Moo Gak and that’s a great role to rest on as he heads off to the army. Even better is winning a Baeksang Best New Actor award in film for his role in Sea Fog. I still don’t find Yoochun good looking in the way so many K-stars seem packaged in the same tall flower boy vein, but that’s a good thing as he stands out for being attractive in a relatable way, like the handsome oppa next door that really could live next door. He did a Star1 pictorial in April prior to Smelly Girl so check it out for some very pretty Yoochun pics.

JYJ’s Junsu and Rest of “Death Note” Cast Share Their Definitions of Love

JYJ’s Junsu and Rest of “Death Note” Cast Share Their Definitions of Love
At a press conference held on June 1 for upcoming musical “Death Note,” the cast members shared their definitions of love in light of the characters they depict.
JYJ’s Junsu, who plays the character L in the musical, defined love as sacrifice, “The greatest definition of love is sacrifice. In ‘Death Note’ the musical, you can see the sacrifice in Rem’s (Park Hye Na) unconditional love for Misa (Jeong SunA).”
Park Hye Na also referenced her character Rem as an example of true love, “There is a scene where [Rem] puts her life on the line so that Misa can attain love. She transforms because of Misa’s devoted love. I believe love is a sublime power that most humanizes and beautifies mankind.”
Hong Kwang Ho, who depicts Light, shared, “To me, love is giving up the starring role in my life. It’s taking on the supporting role and putting the people you love in the lead.”
Mentioning her character Misa, Jeong SunA said, “Misa is a character who loves Light [so much] that she gives him her all, but I think the love between me and Rem (Park Hye Na) is worth focusing on more. Sure, [Rem] admires Kira who avenged her parents, but it was the love between a human being and a god of death (shinigami) that touched my heart.”
Meanwhile, “Death Note” is a musical adaptation of the titular hit manga series by Takeshi Obata. It will run at the Seongnam Arts Center Opera House from June 20 to August 9.

JYJ’s Junsu Commended for Defying Idol Stereotypes by “Death Note” Co-Star Hong Kwang Ho

JYJ’s Junsu Commended for Defying Idol Stereotypes by “Death Note” Co-Star Hong Kwang Ho
JYJ‘s Junsu will soon be showing off his acting chops as the eccentric and mysterious character L in the musical “Death Note.” He will be acting opposite actor Hong Kwang Ho, who is playing the role of Light. On June 1, the two actors talked about working together at a press conference held along with their fellow cast members.
When asked about Junsu, Hong Kwang Ho says, “He has thoroughly prepared, and of course he is very skilled. When I heard that the other lead character would be played by Junsu when I signed up for the show, I knew it was going to be really fun to work with him.”
He adds, “Honestly, I unconsciously had a bit of a prejudice because he had started out as a singer, as an idol. Then I saw him perform in ‘December.’ That was the first time I’d seen him, and I thought to myself, ‘He’s not like the rest,’ and ‘He deserves to be up there.’”
“I’m happy to be working with him, and I’m really excited,” he says.
In reply, Junsu also talks about his co-star, saying that he had known that Hong Kwang Ho was an excellent singer and considers him to be one of the top musical actors in the country. “I had really wanted to perform with him, and I also really wanted to do a show that had two male leads. So I’m so happy to be working with him together in this show.”
The musical’s opening night performance will be held on June 20, and the show will run until August 9.

Yoochun celebrates his birthday with 8,000 fans

June 1, 2015 @ 4:52 pm

Yoochun had an amazing time with his fans at the end of May for his birthday celebrations!

C-JeS Entertainment stated, "Yoochun successfully wrapped up the '2015 Yoochun Fan Meeting "Housewarming Party : Epi 2"' that he opened for two days on May 30 and 31 at Korea University's Hwajeong Gymnasium."

This fan meeting, which lasted 150 minutes each time, was scheduled specially to celebrate his birthday, so he enjoyed the "Happy Birthday" song from his fans, made a wish before blowing out the candles on his cake, and more.  The event took place with the concept of a housewarming and even included surprise phone calls from JYJ's Junsu and actor Seol Kyung Kyu!

During the chatting sessions, he talked about his favorite present from fans, the productions he had worked on, stories with his fellow group members, and more to satiate his fans' curiosity.  He even did the cute and funny poses from his latest drama, 'The Girl Who Sees Smells'!

There was additionally an NRB time where he sang songs recommended by the fans, whether it was rap or ballad.  He then transformed into a chef to personally cook food for the lucky fans and into a caricaturist.

Of course, he treated fans to his heavenly voices in special performances as well and relayed a sweet message: "I am happy I got to show myself comfortably in front of everybody.  I'm always grateful and it was a very fun time.  I think I was able to get a big award for 'Sea Fog' thanks to all of you.  I will repay you with an even greater acting in 'Lucid Dream.'  Please look forward to it."

Kim Jun-su loved 'Death Note' manga, asked to star in the musical

Updated : June 01 2015
K-pop singer and musical actor Kim Jun-su said the reason he was cast in the upcoming musical "Death Note" is because he was "deeply impressed" by the cult Japanese manga and anime series on which it is based.

"During my student days, I was deeply impressed by the 'Death Note' manga and animation. I really enjoyed reading and watching them," said Junsu, who is known for being a member of K-pop trio JYJ.

"I heard 'Death Note' could be adapted into a musical a year or two before (it launched) and wanted to star in it," said Junsu at a press for the musical, Monday. "I made a request to star in it through my agency."

The musical adaptation of "Death Note," which is already underway in Japan, features a genius private detective named L -- played by Junsu -- and a high school student bent on murder through a supernatural notebook. The notebook grants its owner the ability to kill people by writing their names in the notebook.

Celebrated musical actor Hong Kwang-ho will play the evil high school student, named "Lighto," when the musical comes to Korea later in June.

The original cult manga series was published between 2003 and 2006, followed by a popular anime TV series between 2007 to 2008.

The musical, which premiered in Japan on April 6, will run in Korea for seven weeks from June 20. Other actors starring in the musical are Jeong Sun-ah, Park Hye-na and Kang Hong-seok.

"I am practicing hard with top actors. I wish to meet the audience soon," said Junsu at a press call on Monday afternoon.

His costar Hong said that he was initially prejudiced against Junsu because of his K-pop background.

"I didn't realize it, but I had a prejudice (against Junsu) for his pop background, but seeing him perform (made me) realize he's not just average," said Hong. "He's not here for no reason. I'm happy to star beside him and am looking forward to the performance."

Junsu first appeared in a musical in the hit production "Mozart!" in 2010, which was followed by "Elisabeth" the same year.

He also starred in the musicals "Musical Tears of Heaven" in 2011, "December" in 2013 and "Dracula" last year.

He was awarded Best Musical Actor at the 18th Korea Musical Awards in 2012. The 28-year-old star also won Most Popular Musical Actor at the event for four consecutive years between 2010 to 2013.

"Death Note" was coproduced by composer Frank Wildhorn, scriptwriter Ivan Menchell and lyricist Jack Murphy. The musical will run from June 20-Aug. 9 at the Seongnam Arts Center Opera House in Seoul.

JYJ′s Kim Junsu shared about the burden of being single cast in the music Death Note.

On June 1, Kim Junsu attended the press conference for musical Death Note at the Floating Island in Banpo, where he shared that he felt some burden about his single-casting.

"I had a lot of worries this time around. However, as I made the decision on the single-casting, I thought it was the best time to be with great actors, whom I can lean on."

JYJ′s Kim Junsu is Burdened by Single-Casting and Location of ′Death Note′ Musical
"I will be having the most shows in my musical career. If 15 shows have been the most, this time, the musical will open up to 22 shows," said Junsu. "Also because the location is in Seongnam, I am a bit nervous as it′s a bit off the metropolitan area. But I′m glad and reassured to be doing it with great actors."

Kim Junsu has been cast as the character L, a mysterious detective that attempts to solve unsolved cases from around the world. Through the ′death note,′ L goes against a battle with Light (Hong Kwang Ho), who wants to become the god of the new world.

The musical Death Note is based on the original manga series by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. The musical is a project created by Japan′s art director, Kuriyama Tamiyaga, music composer Frank Wildhorn, and music director Kim Moon Jung.

The Korean version of Death Note will run between June 11 and August 11 at the Seongnam Arts Center Opera House.
